Dennis L. Smith (Executive Chairman)
Mr. Smith has worked in the pharmaceutical industry since 1973, and most recently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of INO Therapeutics LLC., a specialty pharmaceutical company with strengths in development, marketing, and sales of critical care drugs and drug/device combinations, and focused on making innovative therapies available to healthcare professionals and patients. Prior to INO, Mr. Smith spent 15 years with The DuPont Pharmaceutical Company, where he served as President of U.S. Operations, Executive Vice President of Global Health Systems, Executive Vice President in Europe, and Vice President and General Manager in Canada, among numerous other positions at DuPont Pharmaceuticals and DuPont Merck. He was also employed at Baxter International and Sandoz Pharmaceuticals (now Novartis). He is a graduate of Michigan State University and the Lake Forest Graduate School of Business.
James Thomas (Director)
Prior to co-founding Thomas, McNerney & Partners, Mr. Thomas led E.M. Warburg, Pincus & Co., L.L.C.'s health care technology private equity practice. During his 12-year tenure at Warburg, he was directly involved in portfolio company investments totaling over $450 million, including investments in American Medical Systems Holdings, Inc. (AMMD), The Medicines Company (MDCO), NeXagen, Inc. (NXGN/NXTR), Oxford GlycoSciences, plc (OGSI), Transkaryotic Therapies, Inc. (TKTX), Wright Medical Group, Inc. (WMGI) and Xomed Surgical Products, Inc. (XOMD).
Mr. Thomas also serves a board member of Clarus Therapeutics, Inc. and Galil Medical. Prior to joining Warburg, he was a Vice President at Goldman Sachs International in London, England. Mr. Thomas graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and received an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics.
Liza Page Nelson (Director)
Ms. Nelson has been Managing Director at Investor Growth Capital (IGC) since 1998 and is Co-Head of the firm's Healthcare investing activities. Prior to IGC, Ms. Nelson spent 10 years with Pfizer Inc., where she held a series of positions with increasing responsibility in corporate finance/M&A, strategy, business development, marketing and operating management. Prior to Pfizer, she was with the New York offices of the Boston Consulting Group and E.M. Warburg, Pincus & Co, where in both cases she concentrated on healthcare and life sciences.
Ms. Nelson received an M.B.A. in Finance and Marketing from the Yale School of Management and a B.A. in Economics from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She also serves as a board member of Ception Therapeutics, Ceregene, and Epigenesis Pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Douglas Fambrough (Director)
Dr. Fambrough is a Principal with Oxford Bioscience Partners, specializing in biotechnology investments. In addition to Solstice, Dr. Fambrough represents Oxford on the board of Sirna Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNAI) and as an observer to Cambrios Technologies Corp., RibX Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Xantos Biomedicine AG. Prior to joining Oxford Bioscience Partners in 1999, he was a genomics researcher at the Whitehead/MIT Center for Genome Research, where his work in functional genomics led to major publications in the journals Cell and Nature Genetics. He graduated from Cornell University and obtained his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley.
Brian M. Gallagher, Ph.D. (Director)
Dr. Gallagher is currently a Director and President and CEO of Magen Biosciences, Inc. Previoulsy he served as Director and President and Chief Executive Officer for CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from April 1994 until December 2003, during that time, he also served as Chairman of the Board. From 1988 until joining CollaGenex, Dr. Gallagher was employed by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and its predecessor, Squibb Corporation, in various executive positions including strategic planning, worldwide product and business development, and marketing. Starting in 1991, Dr. Gallagher was vice president and general manager of the in vivo imaging pharmaceutical division of Squibb Diagnostics, where he was responsible for drug development, and filing NDAs with the FDA and other regulatory authorities worldwide. Prior to that, Dr. Gallagher served for ten years with the E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company in a variety of pharmaceutical research, development, marketing, and business management positions. Dr. Gallagher received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Cell Physiology from St. Johns University, and his
B.S. degree from St. Louis University.
Patrick H. Daugherty (Director)
Mr. Daugherty is a Partner and his responsibilities include managing the Distressed Investments Group and Private Equity Group at Highland Capital Management, L.P. (“Highland”). He formally served as General Counsel and Head of the Merchant Banking Group at Highland. Prior to joining Highland in April 1998, Mr. Daugherty served as Vice President in the Corporate Finance Group at Bank of America Capital Markets, Inc (formerly NationsBanc Capital Markets, Inc.) where he originated and structured leveraged transactions of mid-cap companies located in the Southwest. Prior to joining Bank of America, Mr. Daugherty was an Associate with the law firm of Baker, Brown, Sharman and Parker in Houston, Texas. Mr. Daugherty currently serves on the Board of Directors of Trussway Holdings, Inc. and its affiliates (as Chairman), Home Interiors & Gifts, Inc. and its affiliates (as Chairman), Safety-Kleen Holdco., Inc., and is a former board member of SunCom Wireless Holdings, Inc., Norse Merchant Group and its affiliates, Ferrimorac Holdings Limited, and Mariner Health Care, Inc. He received a Juris Doctorate from The University of Houston School of Law, and a BBA in Finance from The University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Daugherty is a member of the Texas Bar Association.
Dave Jones (Director)
Mr. Jones is a Senior Portfolio Analyst at Highland Capital Management, L.P. Prior to joining Highland in January 2008, Mr. Jones was a Team Leader at Pfizer Inc. where he designed and managed health improvement programs across a range of clinical areas. Prior to this, he was a healthcare investment banking Associate and Vice President with Goldman Sachs and Coady Diemar Partners, advising on merger, acquisition and corporate finance transactions with biopharmaceutical, technology, and healthcare services firms. Prior to business school, Mr. Jones was an Associate Management Consultant with CSC Healthcare Consulting (formerly APM, Inc.) advising hospitals, health systems, and managed care organizations on operational improvements and acquisition integration. He currently serves on the board of Cornerstone Healthcare Group. Mr. Jones received an MBA from Stanford University and his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, where he majored in history and completed all pre-medical coursework.
